I just joined this forum and I am hoping I can find some assistance. I have a very low budget to build a 3 axis gimbal for my Canon EOS M camera. It weighs a little over one pound/503 grams or so with the lens and battery. I think It is close to a GoPro, but I have been looking for a mid size setup from what I have read in research. Does anyone know if a GoPro gimbal system would work with a little extra weight?
I was hoping for motors at $20 each, a frame kit for $100 or less and a 32 bit 3 axis controller for $100 or less. That would get me closer to $260 total.
Update= I just found these hollow shaft motors for $13.27 (three pack). Is anyone familiar with hese motors and the seller? Will these motors handle my camera weight?
I also forgot to say that I might need to build this gimbal to also handle cameras I might obtain in the future that will weigh more. Such as the Sony A7s or GH4.
I ordered this 32bit controller for £65 (about $99), it has two IMU sockets on the board, so you can plug both sensor cables into the board or loop from one to another if you cables are too short to reach. Also comes in little plastic boxes! You won't need anything else (unless you want to add bluetooth!)
Three of the DYS-BGM5208-200T motors will be plenty of power for the Canon EOS M camera, although the Panasonic GH4 and Sony A7S Camera bodies are light on weight, if you want to handle heavier cameras or maybe just heavy lenses, I'd look at getting two DYS-BGM5208-200T motors for the PITCH and ROLL, and then a stronger DYS-GM60-80T motor at the top for the YAW, it's a bit more expensive though and maybe push up your budget.
kirkyuk, Thank you for the helpful information. I will check it out. I am slowly finding out more the deeper I look around the internet the last two days. I did see a controller for $98 like you mention. http://www.ebay.com/itm/390995297890?rmvSB=true
I hope I can find a frame kit that is low cost and good. The Mr CheesyCam made a real nice kit. You can find his videos on YouTube and his site at http://minigimbal.com/. He wants $600 and there are no motors, controller or battery. Too expensive for me at the moment.
Your ebay linked controller is +p&p tho. It also doesn't have the plastic casing that I personally wanted or the standard connectors on the board. Other than that they are the same board.
I don't think those Turnigy motors will handle the weight of a GH4 with lens? also, I purposely got motors with a shaft (hole) through the middle so that I could tidy the cables through the frame.
That frame looks good, but dofinately pricey! I just ordered this frame and screwed it together myself:
