Why is MEMS gyroscope leading the way?
  • MEMS gyroscope is an emerging technology in the 21st century. It is a chip-based gyroscope since it is small and lightweight. The emergence of MEMS technology met the market's requirements for small-sized, high-performance sensors, so it was quickly put into mass production. Nowadays, MEMS gyroscope has gradually replaced traditional mechanical gyroscope and occupied a place in the market.
MEMS gyroscope has a wide range of applications and can be used in industrial fields, such as oil logging, mining equipment, drones, and aerospace. MEMS also has basic consumer applications, such as smartphones and automobiles.
Let’s take a look at the highlights of MEMS technology:
    1. Applied to IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit)
The IMU is composed of a gyroscope, an accelerometer and a magnetometer. It can measure linear acceleration and rotational angular velocity in three directions and obtain the attitude, speed and displacement information of the carrier. By adding different algorithms to the IMU, it can become a different system, such as INS (Inertial Navigation System), north seeker, etc.
    2. Applied to drones, aerospace
Using MEMS sensors, the drone can ensure its direction is stable and can be precisely controlled by the user and even fly autonomously. Due to increasingly higher requirements, such as accuracy, size restrictions, resistance to harsh environments, etc., MEMS gyroscope can meet their needs.
At the same time, MEMS can also be used in AHRS (Attitude Heading Reference System), which estimates device positioning, such as roll angle, pitch angle and yaw angle. MG2-300/400 is specially designed for air navigation.
    3. Used in logging tools and mining equipment
Due to the harsh working environment in the petroleum logging and mining fields, there are restrictions on size. MEMS gyroscope is a very suitable choice for gyroscopes that are small in size, have good shock resistance and can withstand harsh environments. MG2-022 is specially designed for gyro tools, and the maximum working temperature can reach 125 degrees.
Moreover, the working environment is mostly underground with unstable signals and cannot rely on GNSS, but MEMS gyroscope can stably output data.
