Adding Encoders to a Gimbal System
  • Hello everyone,

I'm working on a project where I need a small gimbal (mountable on a multi-rotor vehicle), that has encoder or position feedback on the motors, for less than $1000. I haven't been able to find any off the shelf solutions which include the encoder feedback on the motors within that price point, so I'm thinking I may have to add the encoders myself to an existing gimbal system. Does anyone have any experience adding encoders or pots to existing gimbals?

Judging from this document, https://www.basecamelectronics.com/f...t_Encoders.pdf, it seems like the AMT203 encoders should be reasonably straightforward to mount on the gimbal motor shafts, assuming enough of the shaft is exposed on the back of the motor.

If anyone has any insight as to the easiest gimbal + encoder combo to put together and interface with the SimpleBGC Board, your help is very much appreciated!
  • There are some motors with build in encoders http://www.etecpower.com/html_products/Encoder-71.html that would be easiest DIY solution.

Here is my latest build with AS5048 encoders http://www.levitezer.com/styled-2/blog-2/index.html

AS5048 requires some tools to build.

    I do custom builds.
