32bit Flash Pins....what do they short?

I'm hoping this will get an answer because my other question may well get lost in the thread it's in.

On the 32bit version of the board there is a set of FLASH pins, but not on the 8bit version (which I have, and which is bricked). So what does the FLASH pin jumper short? Adding the jumper on the FLASH pins must bypass something...what is that something?
